When you collect roofing quotes in Huntington, you'll see logos like Owens Corning Preferred, Platinum Preferred, and maybe a GAF badge on the next quote. These certifications determine which warranty you can get and who pays if the installation goes wrong.

An Owens Corning certification means the manufacturer has checked a roofer's insurance, business records, and installation work, and allows them to offer its extended warranties. The top tier, Platinum Preferred, is the only one that can register the Platinum Protection warranty, where Owens Corning itself backs the workmanship. It does not replace a Suffolk County license.

We're Smart Choice Contracting, a roofing contractor in Huntington, New York, and we hold Owens Corning's Platinum Preferred status. So we’ll explain what the certifications are, what they aren't, based on our firsthand experience, and how to check any roofer's claims, ours included.

What Does a Roofing Certification Mean?

A roofing certification is a private credential from the company that makes the shingles. A license is a legal requirement from the county. You want both, because they check different things.

Credential

Who issues it

What it tells you

Home improvement license

Suffolk County Department of Labor, Licensing & Consumer Affairs

The contractor can legally sign and perform your job. Applicants must pass a written exam on county code and New York business law.

Liability and workers' comp insurance

A private insurer

You're protected if a worker is hurt or your house is damaged during the job.

Manufacturer certification

Owens Corning, GAF, CertainTeed, and others

The shingle maker has reviewed the company and allows it to offer extended warranties on that brand.

There are two things people often get wrong:

  • A certified roofer doesn't work for the manufacturer. Certified contractors are independent businesses. Owens Corning, for example, vets us; we don't work for it. Your contract is always with the roofer.
  • A logo isn't a license. Huntington is in Suffolk County, so anyone roofing your house needs a Suffolk home improvement license, even if the crew is based in Nassau. Ours are Suffolk #HI-62204 and Nassau #189141. Ask any roofer for theirs and check it.

Owens Corning Preferred vs Platinum: The Three Contractor Tiers

Owens Corning sorts roofers into three tiers: Contractor Rewards, Preferred, and Platinum Preferred. Only the top two involve real vetting, and both are by invitation from a local Owens Corning sales manager, as the company's network lead explained in a RoofersCoffeeShop interview.

Tier

How a roofer gets in

Warranties they can offer you

Contractor Rewards

Signs up and buys Owens Corning products. It's just a loyalty program.

The standard product warranty, the same as any roofer

Preferred

Invited by Owens Corning after meeting its business standards, including at least $1 million in general liability insurance

Standard, System Protection and Preferred Protection

Platinum Preferred

Invited; must carry at least $1 million in general liability and meet Owens Corning's top standards for reliability, professionalism, and craftsmanship (Owens Corning)

All of the above, plus the Platinum Protection warranty, which only Platinum contractors can register

So, there are two practical takeaways for you:

  • Read the tier. A Contractor Rewards member buys Owens Corning shingles and may show the brand, but can't offer any extended warranty. If a quote says "Owens Corning certified", ask which tier.
  • The program doesn’t check the company in general. Owens Corning reviews the business and inspects its work, but many large roofing companies sell the job and subcontract the work. Ask who will be on your roof and who will supervise. On our jobs, our own crew shows up, and our founder, Michael, is on site.

Only a handful of roofers serving Huntington, Melville, Dix Hills, and Northport hold Platinum status. Owens Corning's contractor finder shows the current list for your ZIP code, with each company's tier on its profile (here's ours).

The Owens Corning Warranties, Side by Side

The shingles can be identical on every quote. What changes with the contractor's tier is how long the coverage stays at full value and who pays when the installation itself is the problem.

Source: Owens Corning warranty overview and the Platinum Protection warranty (August 2026 edition). Terms shown are for lifetime shingles such as Duration on a single-family home you live in.

What Does "Limited Lifetime" Mean?

Almost every shingle is sold as "lifetime". The number that matters is the full-coverage period, which Owens Corning calls TRU PROtection. On Duration shingles under Platinum Protection, that's 50 years; after that, coverage drops to 20% of material costs.

What Happens If Your Roofer Goes Out of Business?

Under Platinum Protection, the installing contractor handles workmanship problems in the first two years; if they can't or won't, Owens Corning arranges the repair. After that, Owens Corning covers workmanship directly.

With a Standard or System warranty, an installation mistake is covered only by the roofer's own promise, which disappears if the company does.

The Fine Print We Walk Every Customer Through

From the current Platinum Protection document:

  • Your roofer must register it within 60 days. No registration, no extended warranty. Ask for the certificate.
  • It requires a full tear-off of the whole house. The old shingles, felt, and flashing must come off, and new metal flashing and drip edge must be installed. A partial roof doesn't qualify.
  • It doesn't cover parts Owens Corning doesn't make, including flashing, pipe boots, wood decking, and roofing nails. Those are on your roofer, which is why the next two sections matter.
  • Report problems within 30 days of finding them, and don't let anyone repair the area before Owens Corning reviews the claim.

If you're replacing a roof anyway, the paperwork above is free to ask about. Our roof replacement page shows how our two Owens Corning packages map to these warranties.

Why the Installer Matters More On a Huntington Roof

Shingles rarely fail in the middle of the roof. They fail at the edges, valleys, chimneys, and nails, and Huntington tests each one with wind, ice, and salt air.

This year was a good reminder. The February 22 to 23 blizzard dropped up to 31 inches on parts of Suffolk with gusts above 55 mph. In early July, PSEG Long Island reported gusts over 70 mph and hail in Suffolk. On August 22, Nassau declared a state of emergency after strong gusts and a tornado. Here's how each of those threats connects to certification and installation.

Wind

Duration shingles have SureNail, a reinforced strip that grips each nail harder. Under Platinum Protection, they're covered against blow-offs in winds up to 130 mph for 15 years, or 160 mph if installed to Owens Corning's enhanced wind instructions.

Two limits to know:

  • No coverage until the shingles seal. The sealant needs several days of warm sun, which can take a while on a late-fall roof. Until then, the nails do the work, so we use six per shingle on every roof.
  • No coverage above the rated speed, or for hail or falling branches. Those are insurance claims.

Ice

New York code requires an ice barrier from the roof edge to at least 24 inches inside the exterior wall. Owens Corning doesn't cover leaks from ice dams that form above the barrier. That's why we install six feet along the gutter line, and up to nine on wide overhangs. Our guide to preparing your roof for storm season covers what you can check yourself.

Salt Air

Within a couple of miles of the Sound and Huntington Bay (Lloyd Harbor, Cold Spring Harbor, Centerport, Northport), salt air corrodes nails, flashing, and drip edge first. If you're shopping for Northport roofing, ask about those parts as closely as you do about the shingle brand.

Owens Corning also warns that in some coastal areas, copper from algae-resistant shingles can corrode aluminum gutters, and it recommends vinyl gutters there. Check your gutters and gutter guards at the same time as the roof.

Further inland, salt matters less. Roofing in Melville and Dix Hills deals mostly with wind, ice, and complex rooflines.

Why Roofing Certification Is Mostly an Asphalt Shingle Story

Owens Corning's contractor tiers and its extended warranties are built around asphalt shingle roofing systems. If you want a manufacturer standing behind both the material and the installation, you're choosing asphalt.

That's not a knock on other roofs. Cedar, slate, and metal can be excellent on the right house, and many older homes near Huntington Village and Cold Spring Harbor used cedar for decades. But their warranties work differently, and the installer usually provides installation coverage alone. If you're pricing one of them, ask exactly what's covered in writing, and by whom.

We install asphalt shingles only, so here are the Owens Corning lines you're most likely to see on a Huntington quote, from the current warranty table:

Does a Certified Roofer Cost More in 2026?

Certification doesn’t change the price, but warranties do. The warranty package you choose changes the price, because better warranties require more Owens Corning components under the shingles.

Prices also went up this year for every roofer, certified or not. Owens Corning raised prices on shipments from June 1, 2026, including $8.01 per square (100 sq ft) on Duration shingles. GAF raised its shingle prices 6 to 9% the same day. In August, Owens Corning told investors it expected about $40 million in added costs in the third quarter, with roofing the most affected business.

So, locally, you should expect higher pricing than in previous periods, but it’s small next to the cost of a roof that fails early. If the timing is tight, our financing options include 0% for five years for qualified homeowners.

How to Compare Three Quotes on Certification

In Roofing Contractor's 2026 annual homeowner survey, 46% of homeowners said proven experience and roofing-specific certifications decide between two roofers, and 66% said they'd collect three quotes. When you line yours up:

  1. Write the warranty name from each quote next to its price: Standard, System, Preferred, or Platinum Protection.
  2. Compare full-coverage years and workmanship years, using the table above.
  3. Check the parts no warranty covers: nail type, nails per shingle, ice barrier width, flashing material.
  4. Only then compare price. A lower quote with a Standard warranty and electro-galvanized nails isn't the same roof.

And if you want a starting number before anyone visits, our instant quote gives you a starting range online.

Owens Corning vs GAF Certification

Both companies run similar ladders, and their top tiers are close. In practice, choose the best roofer you can find.

Where they differ for a Huntington home is in the details: transfer rules, required components, and how wind coverage is earned. Whichever brand you're quoted, ask for the warranty by name and read its exclusions. We compared the shingles themselves in our Owens Corning vs. GAF shingles guide.

How to Check a Roofer's Certification in Five Minutes

Check the tier on Owens Corning's site, the license with Suffolk County, and the warranty name in the contract. A logo on a truck or a yard sign proves nothing.

  1. Look the company up on Owens Corning's contractor finder. Search your ZIP code and check the tier shown on the company's profile.
  2. Confirm the Suffolk home improvement license with Suffolk County Consumer Affairs, and Nassau's too if the company is based there.
  3. Get the warranty name in the written contract: Standard, System Protection, Preferred Protection or Platinum Protection. "Manufacturer warranty" on its own means nothing specific.
  4. Ask who registers it, and when you'll get the certificate. The roofer has 60 days to register a Platinum warranty (Owens Corning).
  5. Ask for a certificate of insurance naming you, and make sure the policy covers roofing work. Some general contractor policies quietly exclude it.
  6. Ask what nails are in the quote, and how many per shingle, in writing.

What Information to Ask from the Roofer Besides The Certification?

No manufacturer certification or warranty covers nails. Owens Corning's Platinum warranty specifically excludes failed or corroded roof nails. Your roofer makes the choice, and the risk is yours.

If you live near the Sound or the harbors, ask for hot-dipped galvanized (HDG) nails in writing. Their zinc coating is at least 1.7 mils thick, compared with at most 0.36 mils on electro-galvanized nails, and a quote that just says "galvanized" usually means electro-galvanized.

On North Shore tear-offs, we often find electro-galvanized nails rusted through after 14 to 15 years while the shingles still had life left. Farther inland, for example, on a Dix Hills roof replacement, they're a cheap upgrade rather than a must. We use them on every roof.

The Bottom Line for Huntington Homeowners

Read the tier, compare warranties by name, full-coverage years, and workmanship years. Then ask about the parts no certification controls, starting with the nails, because on a North Shore roof that's often what decides how long it lasts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does an Owens Corning warranty cover storm or hail damage?

No. The Platinum warranty excludes hail, strong storms, winds above the shingle's rating, and falling branches. Storm damage is a homeowners insurance claim.

Does the warranty transfer if I sell my house?

Once, to the next owner, if they file within 60 days of closing with proof of purchase and a $100 fee. If the sale happens in the first 20 years, the buyer keeps the rest of the full-coverage period and workmanship coverage to year 25. After year 20, coverage drops to two years, and workmanship coverage ends. Keep the paperwork with your closing documents.

What if I add solar panels later?

Ask first. Owens Corning won't pay to remove and reinstall solar panels during a claim, and it doesn't cover damage caused by a later solar installation. If solar is in your plans, Owens Corning offers separate Solar PROtect warranties for a roof and solar system installed together by a qualifying contractor.

Is the coverage the same on a rental or a second home?

No. Lifetime coverage applies only to a single-family detached home lived in by its owner. On other buildings, Duration shingles get 50 years, with 20 years at full coverage. Tell your roofer up front if you don't live in the house.

Does a warranty repair cancel my warranty?

Not if a Platinum contractor repairs it with Owens Corning products; your coverage continues. If a claim results in a full roof replacement, the Platinum warranty ends, and the new shingles get a Standard warranty unless you buy a new Platinum system.

Will a new certified roof lower my homeowners insurance?

Not automatically. Each insurer weighs roof age, material, and condition differently. A new roof gives you clear proof of its age: keep the invoice and registered warranty certificate, and send both to your agent when you renew or shop for coverage.
