When you're getting quotes for a new roof on Long Island, two manufacturer names come up constantly: Owens Corning and GAF. Both are major national brands. Both make quality products. But the honest answer is: the products are comparable at similar price points. What matters more is the contractor certification — and understanding what those certifications actually mean for your warranty.
The Manufacturers
Owens Corning has been making building products since 1938. Their roofing products range from entry-level 3-tab shingles to premium lines like Duration, Berkshire, and Woodcrest. Their top contractor designation is Platinum Preferred.
GAF is the largest roofing manufacturer in North America by volume. They produce a similar range — entry-level Royal Sovereign up to premium Camelot II and Grand Sequoia. Their top contractor designation is Master Elite.
Product-to-Product Comparison
At similar price points, the products are genuinely comparable in durability and appearance. The most commonly installed shingles on Long Island — GAF Timberline HDZ and Owens Corning Duration — both carry strong warranties and perform well in the Northeast's climate. If you're comparing shingles at the same price tier, you're unlikely to notice a meaningful difference in real-world performance over 20+ years.
Where It Gets Important: Contractor Certification
A Platinum Preferred contractor (Owens Corning) can offer the System Protection Warranty: 50-year, non-prorated, 100% coverage on both materials and labor. A Master Elite contractor (GAF) can offer the Golden Pledge Warranty: 50-year coverage on materials, with a 25-year workmanship warranty on labor.
On paper, Owens Corning's Platinum warranty is more comprehensive on the labor side. In practice, both represent a significant upgrade over standard warranties, which often cover materials only.
How Rare Are These Certifications on Long Island?
Smart Choice Contracting is one of only nine Owens Corning Platinum Preferred Contractors on all of Long Island. That's an unusually small number for a region with hundreds of roofing companies. Most GAF contractors on Long Island hold the mid-tier "Certified" designation, not Master Elite.
If a contractor tells you they're "certified" by either manufacturer, ask specifically which tier. Certified is not the same as Platinum Preferred, and Certified is not the same as Master Elite.
Key Specs to Compare for Long Island
- Wind resistance: Look for Class F or Class H ratings (110–130 mph). Long Island gets significant wind during storms.
- Impact resistance: Class 4 impact-resistant shingles are available from both manufacturers and can reduce your homeowners insurance premium in some cases.
- Algae resistance: Both manufacturers offer algae-resistant options — worth the small premium given Long Island's humidity.
- SureNail Technology (Owens Corning): Duration shingles include a reinforced nailing zone that pairs well with our use of hot-dip galvanized nails on every install.
The Bottom Line
If you're comparing two contractors at the same product tier, the brand is probably not the deciding factor. Look at the contractor certification tier, the specific warranty terms, the contractor's track record, what's included in the installation, and licensing and insurance.
At Smart Choice Contracting, we install Owens Corning systems as a Platinum Preferred Contractor — a certification held by only nine contractors on Long Island. We chose Owens Corning because of the full 50-year warranty we can extend to our customers, covering both materials and labor, backed by the manufacturer.
