A roof lasts or leaks based on small details most homeowners never see. Smart Choice does four of them that many Long Island roofers skip: extra ice and water shield, copper chimney flashing, chimney crickets, and hot-dipped galvanized nails.
We lay six feet of ice and water shield along every gutter line, while most roofers lay only three feet. Ice and water shield is a rubberized barrier that seals the most leak-prone parts of a roof. Six feet also meets the building code, which requires the barrier to reach at least two feet past the home's outside wall. This is why Smart Choice customers do not call about ice damming.
We use copper flashing on every chimney, not aluminum. Flashing is the metal that seals the joint where a chimney meets the roof. Asphalt shingles contain copper granules. Those granules react with aluminum flashing and slowly break it down, until the chimney has no flashing left. Copper does not react, so it will not fail years later, even though it costs more.
We build a cricket on every chimney that needs one. A cricket is a small, ridged section of roof placed behind a chimney. The cricket diverts water and snow around the chimney instead of letting them pool against the brick. Many roofers skip this step. Smart Choice Contracting does not.
We fasten every roof with hot-dipped galvanized nails. Most roofers on Long Island use electro-galvanized nails. In salt air, those nails rust out in 12 to 15 years and back out of the wood, popping the shingles loose. Hot-dipped galvanized nails carry a thick zinc coating that holds far longer. They cost about two and a half times as much, which is why most roofers avoid them.
