Ice Dams on Long Island: What They Are, Why They Happen, and How to Prevent Them

If you've ever noticed thick ridges of ice forming along the edge of your roof during winter — or seen icicles that look dramatic but feel concerning — you may be dealing with ice dams. For Long Island homeowners, ice dams are a real problem. Here's what you need to know.

What Is an Ice Dam?

An ice dam forms when heat escapes through your roof, melts the snow sitting on it, and that meltwater runs down to the cold eaves (the edge of the roof) where it refreezes. Over time, the ice builds up into a dam that traps more water behind it. That trapped water can back up under your shingles, seep into your attic, damage your insulation, and eventually stain or destroy your ceilings and walls.

What Causes Ice Dams?

The root cause is almost always the same: heat escaping from your living space into your attic. This happens when:

  • Your attic insulation is insufficient or improperly installed
  • Your attic ventilation is inadequate, trapping warm air
  • There are gaps around light fixtures, plumbing, or HVAC equipment where air leaks into the attic

The fix isn't on your roof — it's in your attic. Addressing ice dams permanently requires improving insulation and ventilation so your roof deck stays cold and uniform in temperature.

What Ice Dams Do to Your Roof

  • Force water under shingles and underlayment
  • Damage or rot the roof decking
  • Damage gutters (the weight of ice can pull gutters away from the fascia)
  • Cause leaks at the eaves and into wall cavities
  • Void roofing warranties if not addressed

Temporary vs. Permanent Solutions

Temporary (immediate relief): Using a roof rake to remove snow from your roof's edge before it can melt and refreeze. Electric heat cables installed in a zigzag pattern along the eaves can also help manage ice buildup. These are band-aids, not fixes.

Permanent (actual fix): Improving attic insulation to at least R-49 (the current recommendation for Long Island's climate zone), sealing air leaks, and ensuring proper soffit and ridge ventilation so cold outside air can flush the attic and keep the roof deck uniformly cold.

The Roofing Side: Ice and Water Shield

When replacing a roof in a climate like Long Island's, a quality contractor should always install ice and water shield — a self-adhering waterproof membrane along the eaves and valleys. This is your last line of defense if water does back up under shingles. At Smart Choice Contracting, ice and water shield is standard on every installation.

Is Ice Dam Damage Covered by Insurance?

Typically yes — most homeowner's insurance policies cover sudden and accidental water damage caused by ice dams. However, if the insurer determines the damage was caused by deferred maintenance (ignored insulation or ventilation issues), coverage may be denied. Document damage promptly and call your insurer before attempting repairs.
